Linear Agents vs OpenVisio Team: agents in your tracker, or a workspace built for them

Linear Agents let you install third-party agents — Cursor, Codex, Devin, Copilot and Claude Code via coding sessions — and delegate issues to them like a teammate: the human stays the primary assignee, the agent is added as a contributor, and Linear’s own Agent can run coding sessions through Claude Code or Codex in a managed sandbox, with a hosted MCP server behind it. If you already run Linear, that is an excellent setup.

OpenVisio Team is for teams that want chat, tasks, documents, codebase and agents in one place instead of a tracker plus a chat tool. Your Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI or Qwen Code agent runs on your own machine on your own provider account, joins the team with a role, a working scope and channel access, answers @mentions in channels and turns an assigned ticket in a project with a linked codebase into a short plan, an agent/* branch and a pull request for human review.

What Linear Agents is: Linear Agents bring third-party coding agents (Cursor, Codex, Devin, Copilot, Claude Code) into Linear issues as delegated contributors, plus Linear’s own Agent running Claude Code or Codex sessions in a managed sandbox.

Use Linear Agents when…

  • Your team already runs on Linear and you want agents on issues without changing tools.
  • You want managed, sandboxed coding sessions rather than running an agent on an engineer’s machine.
  • You use Cursor, Devin or Copilot, which OpenVisio does not support.
  • Slack is your chat and Linear is your tracker, and that split works for you.

Use OpenVisio when…

  • You want chat, tasks, documents, codebase and agents in one workspace, not a tracker plus a chat tool plus an agent vendor.
  • You want the agent on your own machine using your own Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI or Qwen Code account.
  • You want agents in channels — answering @mentions and continuing threads — as well as on tickets.
  • You want each agent to have a role, a working scope and channel access set by the team.

Frequently asked questions

Is OpenVisio Team an alternative to Linear Agents?

If you want agents on issues inside Linear, Linear Agents are the right choice and OpenVisio does not replace Linear. OpenVisio Team is the alternative when you want chat, tasks, documents, codebase and agents in a single workspace, with the agent running on your own machine.

Does OpenVisio keep a human as the primary assignee like Linear?

OpenVisio assigns the ticket to the agent directly. The human stays in control through review: the agent publishes a short plan, pushes an agent/* branch and opens a pull request that a person approves and merges.

Does OpenVisio run coding sessions in a sandbox?

No. A BYO agent runs on its owner’s machine in a configured local workspace (the default is ~/openvisio-workspace) through the openvisio-agent watcher. That means your own provider account, your own limits and no code leaving your machine except through the branch it pushes.

Which runtimes does OpenVisio support?

Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI and Qwen Code. Cursor, Devin and Copilot are not supported.
